What does home insurance cover?

Your home is the centre of your everyday life, and with the right home insurance, you'll be well protected if the worst should happen. Home insurance gives you peace of mind by covering damage to the house itself, for example due to fire, storm damage or water damage. Unlike home insurance, which protects your contents, house insurance covers the building itself.

Fire and building damage

Home insurance covers damage caused by:

  • Fire, sooting, dry boiling and blasting.
  • Lightning, explosion and short circuit.
  • Electrical damage to fixed electrical installations and white goods.

It also covers consequential damage such as water damage after fire fighting etc.

Other building damage (Storm, weather damage, theft, vandalism, etc.)

The house is covered by the following coverages:

  • Theft and vandalism
  • Storm (Cloud and thaw)
  • Frost cracks
  • Damage caused by snow pressure
  • Collision and overturning or falling objects
  • Water, oil and coolant leaks
  • Other sudden damage
  • Glass and manhole cover
  • Homeowners liability
  • Legal aid

Fungus and insect

Fungal and insect cover ensures that you cover the costs associated with these types of damage.

  • Covers the cost of repairing the building caused by mould.
  • Covers consequential damage to the building as a result of the mould damage.
  • Damage must be discovered and reported within the insurance period.

Rot damage

Rot damage covers the hidden building parts that are not easily accessible and therefore difficult to maintain.

Pipe damage

Pipe damage covers the cost of repairing and tracing leaks in hidden pipes, including:

These pipes and cables are covered:

  • Water pipes
  • Heating pipes
  • Gas pipes
  • Oil pipes
  • Drainage pipes
  • Electrical cables

Service lines

Includes damage to external underground services. This coverage applies to pipes that you have a duty to maintain and that connect the building to the main line in the road.

These pipes and cables are covered:

  • Water pipes
  • Heating pipes
  • Gas pipes
  • Oil pipes
  • Drainage pipes
  • Electrical cables
  • Heating cables

Extended rot damage

Extended rot damage cover includes damage to:

  • Windows and doors.
  • Conservatories and winter gardens.
  • Cladding on residential buildings.
  • Load-bearing structures in garages, carports and outbuildings.

Extended water damage

Extended water damage covers damage if water enters the house as a result of anything other than a cloudburst or thaw

For example:

  • When water or emergency rain enters the building and cannot be attributed to other coverages, exclusions or limitations
  • Blowing snow if the ceiling is not immediately accessible due to the building structure.
  • After rising groundwater or sewage water entering the building.
  • After leakage from visible installations such as radiators, aquariums and containers with more than 20 litres capacity.
  • If the water bill covers damage to pipes and service lines eligible for cover, loss of water, oil and gas is also covered

Extended home cover (Damage caused by pests, cosmetic damage and landscaping)

Extended home cover covers damage as a result of:

  • Theft, vandalism and collision of landscaping.
  • Pests such as mice, rats and martens.
  • Cosmetic damage (Insurance covers 60% of the costs).
  • Snow blowing.
  • Malfunctions.
  • Building materials

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Below, you can find answers to frequently asked questions. Additionally, you can download the terms and fact sheet for the

husforsikring.

Is it mandatory to have home insurance?

It is not a legal requirement for homeowners to have a home insurance. If you have taken out a mortgage with a bank, the lender will often require you to have at least fire insurance for your house. This protects the bank's money if the house burns down one day, but also gives you as a homeowner great peace of mind that you don't risk being left without a home and with a huge amount of debt.

Does house insurance cover if something is changed after the insurance has been created?

When you create an insurance policy, the insurance terms and conditions and the price will, among other things, be determined based on the information written on the policy. It is therefore essential that the information is in accordance with the actual circumstances, otherwise it may in some cases affect the coverage of a claim and you risk receiving a reduced compensation. It's important to always make us aware of any changes to the way the house is heated, if the type of roof on the building is changed, or in the case of remodelling, new builds and extensions. Of course, you are always welcome to contact us if you have any questions or if your policy needs updating.

Does home insurance cover damage to outbuildings and garages?

Yes, home insurance covers damage to outbuildings, garages, carports and conservatories as these are considered part of your home. It is important to pay attention to what is stated on the insurance policy.

Do I have to pay for damages myself if I rent out the house?

Yes, unless otherwise agreed with your tenant.

If you rent out your house, you should contact Fælles Forsikring so we can make sure that your home insurance includes rental cover.

Is damage to my roof covered even if it's old?

What is homeowner liability?

Homeowner liability refers to the liability you have as a homeowner for damages to your home. property or personal injuries that occur on or around your home. An example of this is if you forget to clear ice or snow from the pavement outside your home and a passer-by falls and hurts themselves. As a homeowner, you are liable for the damage, and your homeowner's liability insurance will cover cases like this.
